Matsuyama Wins The Sentry, Claims PGA Records

Matsuyama Wins The Sentry, Claims PGA Records

With 59 of the top players in the world competing, the 2025 PGA Tour season got underway in Maui this past weekend. Unfortunately, Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world, had to withdraw due to a hand injury sustained over Christmas. However, Hideki Matsuyama emerged as a result, reminding the golf community that he is among the real greats of the sport.

Matsuyama won The Sentry at 35-under after dominating the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort. Collin Morikawa, who performed admirably in Hawaii once more, ended in second position, three strokes ahead of him.

With the victory, Matsuyama established two PGA Tour records: the lowest total score to par and the most tournament-long 35-hole birdie or better record. At this same course in 2022, both beat Cameron Smith's record.

Despite this, the usually composed veteran did not display much emotion following the victory. Matsuyama then disclosed what he understood the record to be.

"I was unsure, but I kind of thought that if I'm thinking that way, it probably won't go in." "You know, I thought maybe it was like 34, 35, but I'm glad it went in."

He had a one-shot lead going into Sunday and quickly extended it. On the third hole, Matsuyama holed out for an eagle and didn't really turn around.

In the past ten months, the Japanese superstar has won three titles. In addition, it was his eleventh career professional victory on the PGA Tour, the most of any golfer ever born in Japan.

The victory earned Matsuyama 700 FedEx Cup points and $3.6 million.

"It was a great way to start because I was able to have a great off-season, get a fresh start this week, and play well this week," Matsuyama stated.
